Lake Superior State tops No. 12 Michigan in the Soo

By @MichaelCaples –

The Michigan Wolverines made the trip up to the Soo for a weekend series with the Lakers, and so far, the hosts haven’t been very accommodating.

Lake Superior State beat Michigan 5-2 Friday night in the first of two games at Taffy Abel Arena, taking control of their weekend non-conference match-up.

Anthony Nellis recorded four points for LSSU in the win, which improved the Lakers’ record to 5-0-0-0 on the season. Nellis scored the Lakers’ first goal of the game to eliminate an early lead for the Wolverines (UM’s Josh Norris scored seven minutes into the contest).

Brayden Gelsinger, Jacob Nordqvist and Max Humitz followed on the scoring sheet as LSSU took control of the contest in a hurry; goals came at the 14:06 mark of the first (Nellis), 14:49 mark of the first (Gelsinger), 0:39 mark of the second (Nordqvist) and 2:53 mark of the second (Humitz).

A second period goal from Jake Slaker made the game 4-2, but Steven Ruggiero regained a three-goal lead for LSSU at the 13:47 mark of the final frame.

Nick Kossoff made 28 saves for the Lakers in the victory; Hayden Lavigne recorded 25 for Michigan.

The two schools play in a rematch tonight (Saturday); puck drops at 7:07.
