Red Wings trade Gustav Nyquist to San Jose

By @MichaelCaples –

Just hours after the Red Wings and Sharks played a game against one another, the two clubs have completed a trade.

Gustav Nyquist is on his way to California.

Detroit announced at 12:18 a.m. that Nyquist has been traded to San Jose. In return, the Wings receive a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

If the Sharks make the Stanley Cup Final or Nyquist re-signs with San Jose, that 2020 draft pick improves to San Jose’s second-round pick.

The Wings now hold four picks in the first two rounds of this upcoming draft, which is expected to be a deep draft class. Detroit has their own first-round pick (which is expected to be a lottery pick) and three second-round picks. That gives the team flexibility to move around on the draft board via trade, or use said picks to bolster their NHL line-up.

Nyquist, 29, has spent his entire NHL career with the Red Wings, the team that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2008 draft.

He has appeared in 481 total games for Detroit, recording 125 goals and 170 assists for 295 total points.

Nyquist is in the midst of a career-best year; his 49 points on the season are five back from his top mark of 54 in 2014-15.
