Humitz’s back-to-back game-winners give LSSU first two-game sweep of Tech since ’83-84

Max Humitz had quite a weekend.

The Livonia native scored the game-winning goal on both Friday and Saturday to give his Lake Superior State squad a pair of wins over in-state WCHA foe Michigan Tech.

They were huge wins for LSSU, as the two victories resulted in the program’s first two-game series sweep of Michigan Tech since the 1983-84.

The wins bumped the Lakers, now 20-8-2 on the season, up to No. 18 in this week’s USCHO college hockey poll.

It’s the first time since the 2006-07 campaign that the Lakers have hit the 20-win mark, as well.

For his efforts, Humitz was named the WCHA’s forward of the week; teammate Steven Ruggiero was named the defenseman of the week by the conference, as well.

Lake State has moved into a tie for second place in the WCHA with Bowling Green. Both teams have 47 points, and they both have two series to go. Neither is entertaining the thought of moving up to No. 1; Minnesota State has a remarkable 59 points in 24 conference games.

LSSU plays at Northern Michigan this upcoming weekend, and then at home against Ferris State to wrap up their regular season on March 1-2.
