One week after being named to the American Hockey League’s 2018 All-Rookie Team, Mason Appleton has earned himself an even higher honor.

Appleton, a 22-year-old Michigan State alum, was named winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s most outstanding rookie for the 2017-18 season as voted on by coaches, players and members of the media in each of the league’s 30 cities..

Appleton leads all AHL first-year players in scoring with 63 points in 73 games for his Manitoba Moose. His 42 assists lead all rookies, as well. A sixth-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 2015, Appleton also sits fourth in overall league scoring with those numbers.

A Green Bay, Wisc. native, Appleton played for MSU from 2015-17 before turning pro.
