Shaved Ice – Jan. 16

Oh, what a weekend…

Quick hits

Well if you were keeping up with our website this weekend – or following us on Twitter – you would know that I covered a whole lotta hockey. Here’s a quick breakdown, because it also wraps up hockey in the state for the weekend:

Friday – I traveled up to East Lansing, to watch the Northern Michigan Wildcats fight back to tie the game in the final minute of regulation, only for the Michigan State Spartans to prevail in the shootout (counts as a tie in the NCAA record book, but earns them an extra point in the CCHA standings). Freshman Matt Berry scored the lone goal in the breakaway sessions to put MSU back on top.

Saturday – For the afternoon time slot, I fought the weather/traffic to get down to Joe Louis Arena. I mean, how can you say no to a nationally-televised Red Wings vs. Blackhawks afternoon tilt? The two division rivals didn’t disappoint in what was another close game. Todd Bertuzzi’s second goal lifted the Wings to an overtime win, and a franchise record-tying 14th straight win at home. Then, at the conclusion of that game, I rushed up to East Lansing to catch the second set of the MSU/NMU series. In yet another game that went down to the wire, Michigan State preserved their one-goal for the entire third period, and held on to win 2-1.

Sunday – Could only manage one game on Sunday, but when it’s in a different state, I think that’s understandable. A few colleagues and I loaded up my car and made the trek to Cleveland to cover the Frozen Diamond Faceoff. Walking into a baseball stadium and seeing a hockey rink was the energy drink I should have had while driving – it was a great time for everybody (except the Buckeyes). The Wolverines continued their stellar play on outdoor ice, topping rival Ohio State 4-1 (the score could have been much worse for the host team). The recap is up on the web right now, and we’ll have more coverage in the next issue of the magazine – due out this weekend.
