Former Wolverines goaltender Shawn Hunwick announced his retirement last night, posting on his personal Twitter account that he will now work with a player agency and be based out of Ann Arbor.

The Sterling Heights native, who played for the University of Michigan from 2007-2011, posted that he will now be joining his agent Alec Schall as part of Legacy Global Sports.

“I have made the difficult decision to stop playing,” Hunwick said on the social network. “It’s been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable memories.

“I am excited to start the next chapter of my life and join my agent @aschall21 and the Legacy Global Sports team.”

Hunwick was the Wolverines’ starting goaltender during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, something that was unexpected when UM coach Red Berenson offered him the third-string spot between the pipes in the summer of 2007.

The 5-foot-7-inch goaltender posted remarkable numbers during his senior season – a 24-12-3 record with a 2.00 goals-against average, .925 save percentage and five shutouts. He finished second in the NCAA in wins, third in shutouts and fifth in save percentage.

That led to him getting a shot with the Columbus Blue Jackets – missing an Astronomy 101 lecture to serve as back-up for the NHL club on March 29, 2012 in a game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Hunwick signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jackets through the duration of the 2011-12 season, and appeared in one game – he played for three minutes and didn’t face a single shot on goal.

During the 2012-13 season, he skated for the South Carolina Stingrays and the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL, and played in eight games for the Iserlohn Roosters of the Deutsche Eishockey League in Germany.

Schall, Hunwick’s agent, tweeted that he was thrilled to have the former Wolverines goaltender joining the Legacy Global Sports staff.

“Pleased to announce that @shawn_hunwick is now a part of our team at LEGACY Global Sports. He is going to represent and advise players.

“I’ve admired Shawn Hunwick since he was 15 playing for Honeybaked. #battle #character He will make a great addition to our team.”
