MiHockey’s 2013 NHL Draft Watch

A new crop of Michigan natives and Michigan connections move one step closer to realizing their hockey dreams today at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in New Jersey. The MiHockey team is keeping track of all the Michigan names picked, and we’re keeping an eye on the latest Red Wings draft class, as well. Follow along with us right here and by keeping up with us on Twitter.

No. 4 overall – Seth Jones – NTDP alum – Nashville Predators

Seth Jones, a Plano, Texas native, was chosen by many to be the top overall pick at the NHL Draft for a long time. The National Team Development Program alum ended up going No. 4 overall to Nashville, where he will make an immediate impact on the Predators’ blue line.

NHL Central Scouting releases final 2013 rankings

No. 20 overall – Anthony Mantha – Detroit Red Wings

Anthony Mantha, from Longueuil, PQ, was the only 50-goal scorer in the QMJHL this season. The Red Wings’ first-round pick scored 89 points in 67 games this season. He was ranked the No. 10 North American skater by NHL Central Scouting in their final report.

“I’ll show the Red Wings that they picked the right guy.” – Mantha just moments after being selected by Detroit.

No. 25 overall – Michael McCarron – Macomb native (Western Michigan commit) – Montreal Canadiens

Michael McCarron, a native of Macomb, was selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the No. 25 overall pick. The National Team Development Program product – and a Western Michigan commit – had five goals and five assists in 19 USHL contests this season. He was rated No. 35 overall by NHL Central Scouting heading into the draft. He’s also a Honeybaked alum.

No. 30 overall – Ryan Hartman – Plymouth Whalers (NTDP alum) – Chicago Blackhawks

Ryan Hartman had to wait until the final pick of the first round to hear his name called. Yet his hometown team picked him, so surely he’s not very upset. The Plymouth Whalers forward – rated the No. 16 North American skater – was picked No. 30 overall by the Chicago Blackhawks to close out the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Hartman scored 23 goals and 37 assists in his first season with the Whalers.

No. 35 0verall – J.T. Compher – University of Michigan commit (NTDP alum) – Buffalo Sabres

J.T. Compher, captain of the U.S. NTDP Under-18 team, will be skating in Ann Arbor next fall. But sometime in the near future, the Sabres hope he will be skating in Buffalo. The Sabres traded up to pick Compher at No. 35 overall. The skilled forward had 18 goals and 31 assists in 55 games this year with the NTDP.

No. 38 overall – Connor Hurley – Muskegon Lumberjacks – Buffalo Sabres

Connor Hurley, who will play for the Muskegon Lumberjacks next season, is a Notre Dame commit and now property of the Buffalo Sabres. Hurley turned heads this season while impressing for Edina High School in Minnesota. He played in 11 games with the Lumberjacks last season, recording one goal and seven assists.

No. 42 overall – Steve Santini – NTDP alum – New Jersey Devils

Steve Santini, a top-level NTDP product, was the first pick of the host team at the draft, after the Devils had traded their first-round pick for goaltender Cory Schneider. Santini, a Boston College commit, had 15 assists and was +15 for the NTDP this season.

No. 48 overall – Zach Nastasiuk – Detroit Red Wings

Zach Nastasiuk, listed at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds on the Ontario Hockey League official site, scored 20 goals and 20 assists last year for the Owen Sound Attack. The Red Wings’ second-round pick was ranked No. 13 out of all North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in their final projections.

No. 58 overall – Tyler Bertuzzi – Detroit Red Wings

Tyler Bertuzzi – yes, he’s Todd’s nephew – will bring some grit to the Red Wings’ line-up when his uncle can no longer do so. The Guelph Storm forward had 13 goals and nine assists in 43 games, along with 68 penalty minutes. In his first OHL season (2011-12), he racked up 117 penalty minutes.

No. 74 overall – John Hayden – NTDP and Honeybaked alum – Chicago Blackhawks

John Hayden, a Greenwich, Conn., native, had 17 goals and 16 assists for the NTDP U-18 team this year. He showed at the USHL Top Prospects Game that he’s not afraid to drop the gloves, either.

No. 79 overall – Mattias Janmark-Nylen – Detroit Red Wings

Mattias Janmark-Nylen, the Red Wings’ first Swedish draft pick of 2013, scored 14 goals and 17 assists last year for AIK of the Swedish Elite League.

No. 84 overall – Jimmy Lodge – Saginaw Spirit – Winnipeg Jets

Jimmy Lodge has been turning heads out in Saginaw. The Spirit star forward, a native of Downington, Penn., scored 28 goals and 39 assists last year, and he’s got a legitimate shot at playing for Team USA at the World Juniors this upcoming winter.

No. 87 overall – Keaton Thompson – NTDP alum – Anaheim Ducks

Keaton Thompson, a native of Devils Lake, N.D., scored four goals and 15 assists last year for the NTDP while patrolling the blue line. He’s going to return home soon, and play for the University of North Dakota.

No. 97 overall – Michael Downing – Canton native (Wolverines commit) – Florida Panthers

Michael Downing, a Canton native, wasn’t picked as high as expected on most draft boards. That could mean that the Florida Panthers got a gem in the later rounds, though. Downing, who played for Detroit Catholic Central before heading to Dubuque of the USHL for two seasons, will play for the Michigan Wolverines next season.

No. 104 – Andrew Copp – Ann Arbor native (University of Michigan) – Winnipeg Jets

Andrew Copp earned rave reviews last season as a freshman with the Michigan Wolverines, and scouts took notice. Now, Copp is property of the same club that drafted his old friend Jacob Trouba last season. The NTDP and Compuware alum had 11 goals and 10 assists as a freshman in the CCHA last year.

Wolverines’ remarkable run continues, but it’s not done yet

No. 105 – Nick Moutrey – Saginaw Spirit – Columbus Blue Jackets

Nick Moutrey had a breakout season for the Saginaw Spirit in 2012-13. He increased his points total by 32 from his freshman to his sophomore seasons, as he recorded 43 in last year. Apparently the Columbus Blue Jackets liked what they saw.

No. 109 – David Pope – Detroit Red Wings

David Pope has now spent three seasons in the BCHL, and his latest was his best. The new member of the Detroit Red Wings scored 17 goals and 22 assists for the West Kelowna Warriors. He’s a 6-foot-2, 187-pound left winger the Wings add to the mix.

No. 113 – Aidan Muir – Saline native (Broncos commit) – Edmonton Oilers

No. 118 – Hudson Fasching – NTDP alum – Los Angeles Kings

No. 121 – Tyler Motte – St. Clair native (Wolverines commit) – Chicago Blackhawks

No. 123 – Will Butcher – NTDP alum – Colorado Avalanche

No. 133 – Connor Clifton – NTDP alum – Phoenix Coyotes

No. 139 – Mitchell Wheaton – Detroit Red Wings

No. 141 – Michael Brodzinski – Muskegon Lumberjacks – San Jose Sharks

No. 151 – Gage Ausmus – NTDP alum – San Jose Sharks

No. 153 – Ben Storm – Muskegon Lumberjacks (Calumet native) – Colorado Avalanche

No. 159 – Sean Malone – NTDP alum – Buffalo Sabres

No. 164 – Dane Birks – Huskies commit – Pittsburgh Penguins

No. 169 – Marc McNulty – Detroit Red Wings

No. 181 – Anthony Louis – NTDP alum – Chicago Blackhawks

No. 189 – Eric Locke – Saginaw Spirit – Buffalo Sabres

No. 197 – Nolan De Jong –  Wolverines commit – Minnesota Wild

    Any thoughts on who the Wings might want? I hear they’re looking for size . anyone in particular they’ve expressed serious interest in?
