Shaved Ice – May 30

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

They dragged the top team in the NHL into overtime of Game 7, but the Red Wings couldn’t finish off the upset last night in Chicago. A goal from Brent Seabrook less than four minutes into overtime eliminated the Red Wings from the 2013 NHL playoffs and sent the Blackhawks on to the third round.

Now the off-season questions begin for the Red Wings. Who comes back? Who goes? Boy, oh boy, let’s try to at least wait until tomorrow to dive into that stuff.

The night wasn’t much better for the Griffins, either. The Wings’ AHL affiliate dropped Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals to the Oklahoma City Barons by a score of 4-1. Chad Billins had the lone goal of the night for Grand Rapids, making him our Michi-gamer for Thursday.

If you dare…

Well, now the third-round series are decided. One of the most interesting parts about it is that the four teams still competing are the four teams to last win the Stanley Cup. Considering the league is built around parity, and it’s so hard to win every year, it’s a rather interesting development.

Chicago, the 2010 Cup champs, will take on the Kings, the defending Cup champs, in the Western Conference Finals. Meanwhile, the Penguins, who won it all in ’09 (sorry for the reminder), will take on the Bruins, who won the Cup in 2011. Who are you putting your money on to win it this year? Both of those series will start on Saturday.

Looks like Michael Ryder will be available as a free agent this off-season.

The NHL is defending the questionable call that saw what looked like the game-winning goal from Niklas Hjalmarsson overturned late in Game 7 last night.
