Shaved Ice – Feb. 8

Snow day edition, starring Petr Mrazek.

What a night for 20-year-old Petr Mrazek. Talk quickly went from “check out how cool that mask is” to “check out all those saves” in a hurry. Now, he did get some help from his new teammates – the Wings finally picked up some secondary scoring, and they helped limit the Blues’ rebound chances at the other end.

Get to know the Red Wings’ new goaltender with our ‘You Should Know‘ feature on him.

Here’s Mrazek’s interview with FSD after his first NHL win last night:

In other news…

Tim Thomas is (kind of) on his way to New York.

Another big weekend of college hockey starts tonight, headlined by Western Michigan hosting Miami in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the CCHA standings. Here are all the games we’ll be keeping an eye on:

  • Miami at Western Michigan
  • Bowling Green vs. Michigan State (home-and-home)
  • Ferris State at Northern Michigan
  • Michigan at Notre Dame
  • Alaska Anchorage at Michigan Tech
Meanwhile, the Griffins are on the road for back-to-back games with the Oklahoma City Barons. Good thing the NHL is back – the Barons were stacked while guys like Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins needed a place to play.
The Plymouth Whalers host the Barrie Colts tonight, puck drops at 7:05. Meanwhile, the Spirit are in Sarnia.

Let us reflect on another ‘wow’ moment for Mrazek.

JT Miller continues to impress – this time, he scored two goals in just his second NHL game. He’s been impressing the Rangers’ coaching staff so much that he was out on the power play when he scored his second last night. Oh yeah, he’s our Michi-gamer, too.

Awesome NHL.com article about U.S. Marine Sergeant Josh Sweeney, who is tearing it up for the national sled hockey team.

Jamal Mayers dropped the gloves with Raffi Torres last night, ‘welcoming’ the guy who knocked out Marian Hossa last spring with some fisticuffs. Blackhawks 6, Coyotes 2.

Pierre LeBrun proposes a third referee that’s watching the game off the ice. Thoughts on the subject? As long as you don’t throw another body onto a crowded ice surface, I’m OK with it.

Hey Murph, better keep your head up this weekend at JLA.

Team MiHockey is competing in the Michigan Pond Hockey Classic this weekend. If you’re playing us, go easy on us. Thanks.
