Lumberjacks acquire Plainwell native Zach Saar

The Muskegon Lumberjacks announced today that the USHL club has acquired forward Zach Saar, a Plainwell, Mich. native, from the Des Moines Buccaneers.

Des Moines received the Lumberjacks’ second-round pick in this year’s USHL Futures Draft in exchange for Saar, while the Lumberjacks received the Buccaneers’ fifth-round pick in the same draft.

Saar, a Penn State Nittany Lions commit, has 12 points in 30 games this season with the Buccaneers. Muskegon owner and CEO Josh Mervis says he’s excited to bring another homegrown player into the Lumberjacks’ locker room.

“We are excited to bring in a power forward, as well as bringing another Michigan-native back home to help the Lumberjacks in our drive for a USHL Championship,” Mervis said in a release. “Zach (Saar) is an excellent player, as well as an NHL prospect that will benefit greatly from having our coaching staff, Jim McKenzie and Ron Gay, help him to develop into his fullest potential.”

Saar is currently in the midst of his third USHL season; he has recorded 47 points in 117 games between Des Moines and the Chicago Steel. Before joining the USHL ranks, Saar played for the Little Caesars Midget Minor squad, recording 49 points in 65 games during the 2009-10 season.
