Shaved Ice – Jan. 30

We’re giving away College Hockey in the D tickets right now…

Make sure you go to our Twitter page to find out how you can win one of four different ticket packages to the Spartans vs. Wolverines game this Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.

We’ll keep the contest going through the work day tomorrow.

In other news…

The Red Wings picked up a 4-1 win over Dallas last night, thanks to Valtteri Filppula and Pavel Datsyuk. The new line combo played pretty well together…see the clips in the ‘Highlight Reel’ below.

The Wings are offering up ticket discounts to hockey players as part of their Hockey Day in Michigan celebration.

Our latest on the Grand Rapids Griffins is a feature about Marysville native Chad Billins – give it a read right here.

USA Hockey Magazine has a feature on Grosse Pointe Woods native Andy Miele; always nice to see our Michigan kids highlighted in national publications. He’s earned it, too.

Nice USCHO piece on Western Michigan by our friend Paula Weston. Check it out right here.

Highlights from last night’s Red Wings game – check out the Pavel Datsyuk puck-distribution methods. Wow.

City councilors in Markham, Ontario approved financing to construct an NHL-ready building, despite there being no plans for a franchise there (at least publicly). Former NHLPA/College Hockey Inc. head Paul Kelly said the NHL has been planning on expansion teams in Quebec and Toronto for quite some time now, though Bill Daly said the claims were bogus. Who knows. I wonder how another team in that area would impact ticket sales for the Red Wings; people between Toronto and Detroit sometimes choose Hockeytown when looking for a team to follow.

New Jersey’s Colin McDonald is the latest player to hear from Shanny – see his questionable hit right here. I say five games for a suspension, even with a shortened season. Not only did he hit the Penguins’ Ben Lovejoy from behind, it looked like he left his feet, too. No place in the game for that.

Five North Dakota players – including four captains – were charged with “unlawful delivery to certain persons” from a party that led to suspension to start the season. They will have pretrial hearings on March 7.

Since Filppula broke out of his scoreless slump last night, it seemed fitting to share this video here. Thanks to Hockey Day in Michigan’s Twitter account for the reminder about this YouTube clip.

See you tomorrow.
