Shaved Ice – July 3

Quick hits

Well if you didn’t know already, we’re still waiting for the big announcements from Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. Most years, I would have told you all to get away from your laptops and smartphones and go jump into a lake instead of sitting around waiting for players to make up their minds. But both of these signings could dramatically affect the Red Wings, so don’t go anywhere, stay glued in your chairs or on your couches, and keep reading Shaved Ice.

Michigan native Chris Conner signed with the Coyotes yesterday. Hopefully he’ll get some more ice time at the NHL level next season.

Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena will host NCAA Regional games this upcoming season. Toledo will host some too. How cool would it be to have one of our Michigan teams playing in either of those locations? Great road trip possibilities.

If you really want to start planning ahead, here’s Team USA’s schedule for the 2013 IIHF World Championship.

While Parise tries to decide between teams, we’re trying to decide whether Gunnar Stahl should have went stick-side on Julie the Cat. He’s fancy, he went glove, but…history could have been different had he played the percentages.

Fun fact: Gunnar Stahl, known in real life as Scott Whyte, was also in D3: The Mighty Ducks, as a member of the varsity team.

Outside the Mitten

Jiri Hudler is getting a raise – from the Flames. The former Red Wing will now call Calgary home after inking a four-year, $16 million contract. Thanks for the time in Detroit Huds, and congrats on the new payday.

We won’t have to deal with seeing Martin Brodeur out of place; he’s staying in Jersey. Would have been really weird to see him in, say, Maple Leafs colors.

Another preview for NHL ’13…would love to be playing that right now on this rainy Monday morning.

We might have more news for you later today. Depends on the names everybody’s been talking about. Hope you have a great day, everybody.
