Shaved Ice – Nov. 16

Somebody get me a cup of coffee.

Quick hits

The Red Wings took on the St. Louis Blues yesterday, and it was a rough start to their four-game road trip. Drew Miller’s goal at the 6:07 mark of the first period turned out to be the Wings’ only goal in the game, and they lost 2-1. Coach Mike Babcock told Fox Sports Detroit’s postgame show that the score “flattered” the Wings, because it should have been a wider gap. The Wings were 0-for-6 on 15 minutes worth of power plays.

League disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan has been busy at the GM meetings this week, but if he caught any of the Wings game, he might be administering another suspension. St. Louis forward Chris Stewart cross-checked Niklas Kronwall in the back a few feet away from the boards in the first period, sending the Wings’ defenseman face-first into the boards in a very dangerous play. Stewart was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the illegal hit. Kronwall was helped off the ice, but returned later in the game.

Highlight reel

Here’s the Stewart hit on Kronwall.

Outside the Mitten

The Avalanche and Penguins clashed on (the channel that for now is still known as) Versus last night, and two of the league’s best competed for goal of the night, if not goal of the year.

In the first period, Matt Duchene went from through-the-legs to backhand roof job.

But then in the third period, helping the Penguins separate from the competition for a 6-3 win, Evgeni Malkin went through somebody else’s legs.

Which one’s the better goal?  I can’t make up my mind.
