With the addition of the Las Vegas Golden Knights franchise, the 2017 offseason is a unique one for the NHL member clubs.

Today, all of the NHL clubs’ protected lists were announced for the upcoming NHL Expansion Draft, as the Golden Knights prepare to fill an empty locker room by selecting players from each of the other 30 rosters. One player from each team will be claimed.

The players selected by Las Vegas will be announced Wednesday during the NHL Awards Show festivities.

Las Vegas must select 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies, so it’s a guessing game as to who they will select from the collection of unprotected players. The 30 NHL clubs had the option of protecting seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender. First and second-year professionals, as well as drafted unsigned players, did not need to be protected. More details about the Expansion Draft process can be found here.

Despite exposing players, NHL member clubs will have the opportunity to negotiate with Las Vegas to try to protect certain players.
