With the Red Wings losing Andreas Athanasiou in Thursday night’s game with a lower-body injury, it made way for another promising prospect.

The Red Wings announced Friday that they have placed Athanasiou (four goals, one assist in 13 games this season) on injured reserve and, in a corresponding move, have recalled Anthony Mantha from Grand Rapids. Mantha, 22, is currently tied for the league lead in goals, with eight through his first ten games of the season.

In his third professional season, the 6-foot-5, 204-pound Mantha has tallied 88 points (44 goals, 44 assists) in 132 games with the Griffins. A native of Quebec, Mantha suited up in ten games for the Red Wings last season, making his NHL debut in the process. He potted two goals and one assist.

Mantha was the Red Wings’ first-round draft pick (20th overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to joining the pro ranks, Mantha recorded 260 points in 189 games for Val-d’Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
