Red Wings hire MSU alum Shawn Horcoff for player development role

The Red Wings have made an addition to their coaching staff, and while the former NHL forward never wore the Winged Wheel, he’s certainly a familiar face.

According to a report by Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman, Detroit his bringing in former Michigan State star Shawn Horcoff to work in a player development capacity.

UPDATE (7:20 p.m.): The Red Wings have confirmed that the team has hired Horcoff as the director of player development.

The announcement would coincide with Horcoff’s retirement from the NHL after 15 seasons.

Horcoff, 37, played for the Spartans from 1996-2000. He recorded 152 career points in four seasons with Michigan State. He was named the CCHA player of the year and an All-American during his final season in East Lansing.

A fourth-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1998, Horcoff spent all but three of his seasons with the Alberta-based NHL franchise. From 2013-15, he played for the Dallas Stars, and he spent last season with the Anaheim Ducks.

He has played in 1008 NHL games, recording lifetime totals of 186 goals and 325 assists for 511 total points.
