Today marks 20th anniversary of Steve Yzerman’s double-overtime Game 7 playoff goal

It might go down as one of the all-time greatest moments from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it happened exactly 20 years ago from today.

On May 16, 1996, the seventh and deciding game between Steve Yzerman’s Detroit Red Wings and Wayne Gretzky’s St. Louis Blues was deadlocked at zero after 80 minutes of hockey.

That is, until Gretzky turned the puck over to Yzerman at center ice just 1:09 into the second overtime. Seconds later, Yzerman approached the Blues’ blue line and ripped a slap shot past Jon Casey in the far corner, sending the Red Wings to the Western Conference Final.
