The New York Islanders have officially added a Bulldog to their organization.

Kyle Schempp signed with the Isles today, inking a two-year entry-level contract with the team that drafted him in 2014.

The Saginaw native and Ferris State captain also signed an amateur tryout contract; he will immediately report to the Islanders’ AHL affiliate – the Bridgeport Sound Tigers – and his two-year contract will kick in next fall.

“We’re excited for Kyle as he embarks on his professional career with the New York Islanders’ organization,” said FSU head coach Bob Daniels in a release. “While we will certainly miss his performance on the ice, his leadership as a team captain will also be hard to replace.

“Kyle’s only six classes or so away from graduation and has made a promise to finish his degree,” he added. “We’re appreciative of his commitment and dedication over the past three years and will be following his career closely in the years to come.”

Schempp, 22, recorded nine goals and 16 assists in 41 games with Ferris State this year, playing a significant role in the Bulldogs’ run through the WCHA Final Five and into the NCAA Tournament.
