It was a rough year for Red Wings prospect Vili Saarijarvi, but apparently it hasn’t stunted his hockey development.

The Griffins posted on Twitter today that the Red Wings have assigned Saarijarvi, the Wings’ third-round pick, to Grand Rapids from his OHL club in Flint.

Saarijarvi, 18, recorded 12 goals and 31 assists for 43 points in 59 games with the Firebirds this past season, in a campaign that featured not one but two head coach firings by the team’s owner.

The Finnish defenseman was the Firebirds’ CHL Import Draft pick last summer after playing one season in the USHL.

The Firebirds failed to make the OHL playoffs in their first season in Flint, freeing up Saarijarvi to make the move to Grand Rapids.
