The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association is set to host its annual Summer Meeting this weekend in Mount Pleasant, where the current and future states of youth hockey will take center stage.

The majority of the 16 proposed rule changes on the agenda are merely for maintenance or involve small wording changes for housekeeping and procedural purposes on MAHA’s part.

One of the hot-button proposals that garnered a lot of discussion during the January meeting was one that aims to look at how associations and club/independent teams are defined. There was some concern over whether some smaller associations were contributing to the overall player pool or simply drawing most of their players from other associations and therefore not contributing to the sport’s growth. After review and discussion in January, the proposal was voted to be forwarded to a special committee for revision at the Summer Meeting.

The weekend will also feature presentations from Chris Snyder, the director of coaching education for the United States Olympic Committee and a Project Play committee member, as well as Dr. Jeff S. Pierce, who will speak about injuries in hockey. Pierce is MiHockey contributor – see his columns here.
