St. Clair resident Mike “Doc” Emrick is receiving a prestigious honor for his work with the game of hockey.

The voice of the NHL on NBC is this year’s recipient of the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting. The longtime hockey play-by-play announcer will be presented with his new award on Nov. 2.

“When I received the call from Vin Scully that I’d been selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award that bears his name, I was speechless, and that’s rare for me,” Emrick said via NHL.com.

The award, presented by WFUV Radio in New York, is named in honor of Vin Scully, the longtime voice of the MLB’s Los Angeles (and Brooklyn) Dodgers.

Emrick has been the main play-by-play announcer for NBC since 2011, and he’s worked more than 3,000 games in his 39 years of calling professional hockey – including 32 in the NHL. Along the way, he has picked up numerous accolades, including receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award from the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008 and the first broadcaster inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. He also has two Emmy awards for best sports play-by-play personality – the first hockey announcer to accomplish that feat.

“Although I am sure the event in November will be another lifetime memory, I have never forgotten the call and the knowledge of the past honorees who voted me this honor,” Emrick said. “I am grateful to Vin and to WFUV, and all on the selection committee.”

Not a bad career for a guy who got his start calling games for the Port Huron Flags.
