While July 1 marks the first day the Red Wings can start signing new players, their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids made the first move.

The Griffins announced this morning that they have signed Western Michigan alum Shane Berschbach to a one-year deal.

The 23-year-old Clawson native is a four-year letterwinner from the Broncos’ hockey program, recording 117 points in 146 career college games. He recorded 38 points in 40 games this season, and was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s player of the week three times.

Before making the jump to college, Berschbach played for Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill with the USHL’s Indiana Ice – they captured the Clark Cup together in 2008-09.
