Michigan Mustangs gearing up for 2014 North American PowerHockey Cup

By Michael Caples –

The Michigan Mustangs are getting ready to represent our state at the 2014 North American PowerHockey Cup in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

From July 21-24, the Mustangs – who are being sent by the Wheelchair Hockey League – will take on teams from Minnesota, Philadelphia, North Carolina, Toronto, Ottawa and Calgary.

PowerHockey is floor hockey played in electric power wheelchairs, which allows for athletes with disabilities like Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Arthrogryposis and Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bones) to compete. The sport has been played in the Michigan since 1995; it originated in Canada in the 1980s.

Check out our article from last year about the Mustangs as they geared up for the same tournament.

The Mustangs are a collection of all-stars from the WCHL, the league that formed in 1995. The WCHL holds four teams and 40 players of males and females ranging from 10 to 60. It is a non-profit organization that offers a competitive hockey league for people with disabilities that couldn’t normally take part in the sport of hockey.
