Justin Abdelkader named captain of Team USA for World Championship (with video)

Early this morning, USA Hockey announced that Muskegon native and Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader has been named their captain for the World Championship.

Abdelkader, a product of Michigan State University, will lead Team USA in the 2014 IIHF Men’s World Championship, which officially begins today with their game against Belarus.

Craig Smith, Colin McDonald and Tim Stapleton will share the assistant captain roles.

Abdelkader played for the U.S. National Team at the 2012 IIHF World Championship in Finland and Sweden. He also represented the U.S. in the 2007 World Juniors, where Team USA won bronze.
