The Grand Rapids Griffins started their 2014 AHL playoff campaign last night, and ended it in memorable fashion – courtesy of Ryan Sproul.

The rookie defenseman fired a long shot on goal from the right boards at the 19:26 mark of the second overtime period that got deflected past goaltender Joni Ortio, giving his Griffins team a 2-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Petr Mrazek made 55 saves in the contest, a new franchise record. His performance topped 54-save performances from Mike Fountain and Pokey Reddick, records set during the Griffins’ IHL days.

Adam Almquist was injured in the first period – he was assisted off the ice after a hit from Max Reinhart and did not return to the contest.

The Heat scored at the 11:44 mark of the first period, with Brett Olson finding the back of the net. From there, Mrazek shut out the Heat for more than four straight periods.

Mattias Backman scored the Griffins’ lone regulation goal, with an assist coming from Andreas Athanasiou.

The game ended at 2:01 a.m. ET.
