The Detroit News is reporting that the State of Michigan has approved funds to demolish Joe Louis Arena once the Red Wings move into their new building.

According to the report, written by Louis Aguilar, the Michigan Strategic Fund voted this morning to demolish the arena at an estimated $6 million (funding of up to $10 million will be available for the project).

A memo to the board stated the following:

“JLA situated downtown just south of Cobo Hall and north of high-rise riverfront residential buildings with direct access to the People Mover will likely be viewed as a prime piece of real estate with several potential commercial redevelopment uses that will lead to increased tax base, jobs and residents.”
