U.S. men fall to Canada in semifinals, will take on Finland for bronze tomorrow

By Michael Caples –

For the second time in as many days, Team USA fell to their main rival.

After watching the U.S. women fall to Canada yesterday, the U.S. men suffered the same fate, as they were unable to find the scoresheet in a 1-0 loss.

With the win, Canada moves on to the gold-medal game to take on Sweden. The U.S., however, will only be able to compete for bronze, which will happen tomorrow against Finland.

Jamie Benn scored the lone goal in the contest, redirecting a pass from Jay Bouwmeester past U.S. goaltender Jonathan Quick in the second period.

The American squad sent 30 shots Carey Price’s way, and the Montreal Canadiens’ goaltender stopped them all.

Livonia native Ryan Kesler had one shot on goal, while Farmington native Cam Fowler didn’t have any notable statistics.

University of Michigan alum Max Pacioretty recorded two shots on goal.

For Canada, Ferris State alum Chris Kunitz finished with one shot on goal, while Michigan State alum Duncan Keith didn’t record any points or shots.

Zach Parise led Team USA in shots with seven; Patrick Sharp led Team Canada with five.

Prior to the semifinal contest, the U.S. team had averaged five goals per game in the Sochi Games.
