In the closing moments of the third period, Henrik Zetterberg came to the rescue for the Red Wings.

The Detroit captain’s shot from just above the goal crease tied the game for the Wings with 17 seconds remaining in regulation Friday night.

Then, with a little help from newcomer Stephen Weiss, the comeback was complete.

The Wings won their first away game of the season against the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime at the PNC Arena, by a final score of 3-2, thanks to an overtime tally from newcomer Weiss.

The Red Wings went 0-for-3 on the powerplay Friday evening, and allowed a goal while shorthanded, yet they still managed to prevail thanks to goals from Justin Abdelkader, Zetterberg and Weiss.

The showdown marked the first Eastern Conference game where the Wings played a team from the Metropolitan Division.

The Wings are now 2-0 on the season, after they won their home opener on Wednesday night, beating the Buffalo Sabres 2-1.

The first goal against the Wings came at 13:30 into the first period, as forward Radek Dvorak sent a deflection off of goaltender Jimmy Howard and into the Detroit goal.

The Hurricanes increased their lead 18:11 into the second period on a power-play goal from Oxford native Nathan Gerbe.

Just when things were looking glum for the Wings, Abdelkader, off a feed from forward Henrik Zetterberg, got a one-timer past the glove side of goaltender Cam Ward.

Things just improved for the visitors from there, as Henrik Zetterberg buried the puck with only 17 seconds left in regulation, forcing the game into overtime.

At exactly 3:13 into overtime, Weiss, a former star forward of the Plymouth Whalers, forced the puck past Ward, winning the game for his new club in the process.

Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27 shots, ending up with a .920 save percentage.

The Red Wings will travel to Boston, as they take on the Bruins tomorrow night.
