Shaved Ice – July 23

Happy Tuesday, everyone.

The national teams released their Olympic development camp rosters yesterday, and Team USA sure did have a lot of Michigan connections listed. Players who got camp invites from USA Hockey:

Dan DeKeyser
Justin Abdelkader
Ryan Miller
Cam Fowler
Jacob Trouba
Jack Johnson
Ryan Kesler
Jimmy Howard
Patrick Kane
and more…

Meanwhile, Michigan connections invited to other camps include:

Team Canada
Duncan Keith (Michigan State Spartans), Chris Kunitz (Ferris State Bulldogs), James Neal (Plymouth Whalers)

Team Russia
Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit Red Wings)

Team Sweden
Jonathan Ericsson (Detroit Red Wings), Niklas Kronwall (Detroit Red Wings), Johan Franzen (Detroit Red Wings), Carl Hagelin (Michigan Wolverines), Gustav Nyquist (Detroit Red Wings), Henrik Zetterberg (Detroit Red Wings), Erik Gustafsson (Northern Michigan Wildcats)

Team Finland
Valtteri Filppula (former Detroit Red Wing), Ville Leino (former Detroit Red Wing)

And in other news…

Crain’s says that hockey fans shouldn’t fret about the Detroit bankruptcy filing in regards to the Wings still getting a new building. They should probably fret for other reasons though…let’s hope our state and our biggest city can get through this.

Tom McCollum will be staying with the Red Wings’ organization after all – just not as a member of the Red Wings. The Griffins have signed the former first-round pick to a one-year AHL contract. Story here.

Mike Babcock will be the bench boss for Team Canada again. They won gold last time, hard to argue the decision.

Because they can’t get here fast enough…

Jaromir Jagr is crossing another NHL team off his list – the future hall-of-famer signed with the New Jersey Devils yesterday. Hope nobody thinks he’s going to be a suitable replacement for Ilya Kovalchuk though…maybe if it was 1993, not 2013.

While the Wings are benefiting from the realignment, the Sharks are not. San Jose will have to travel more than 57,000 miles next season. Ouch.

We’re giving away CCM RBZ skates to help you deal with the heat this summer. It’s really pretty simple on how to enter – all you have to do is post a picture/video on a social media channel that has to do with how you’re staying connected to hockey this summer, and use the hashtag #MiSummerHKY so we know you did so. For more information on it, click the image below.

We’ll be here all week.
