Shaved Ice – June 12

We’re here for a Wednesday edition of Shaved Ice.

Tonight, the AHL Final shifts back to Grand Rapids, as the Griffins look to build on their 2-0 series lead over the Syracuse Crunch. Need to get caught up? Here’s our recaps from Game 1 and Game 2, which both took place in New York. Games 3, 4 and 5 are all in Grand Rapids, and if the series needs more games, it’s back to Syracuse, the two teams go.

Check out this article on Andy Sutton – the former Michigan Tech defenseman is putting his engineering degree to work now that he is retiring from the NHL.

And congrats to Traverse City West defenseman Alec Carruth, this year’s David Mannino Scholarship winner.

Michigan State alums talk Stanley Cup Final, that thing that starts tonight. You excited?

As we just mentioned, tonight’s the night – the puck drops for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at 8 p.m. on NBC and CBC (full schedule below). Who you taking? We haven’t been able to come to a consensus yet.

Grand Haven native Dan Bylsma won’t be job-hunting this summer – the Penguins gave their bench boss a two-year extension, despite them getting swept by the Bruins in the conference finals.

Former Red Wings assistant coach Todd McLellan got an extension from the Sharks, as well.

The Islanders have traded Mark Streit to Philly, which means the Flyers get an early chance to negotiate a deal with the defenseman before free agency starts.

The Canadian Hockey League (the OHL, WHL and QMJHL) announced yesterday that the 2013 Import Draft will be the last time their member clubs can select European goaltenders. The league wants to help with the development of North American goaltenders by giving them more opportunities to play. Can’t argue with that.

A little David Booth with a breakaway goal…at the Brick Tournament.

We’ll see you later today for Game 3 of the Griffins’ series.
