Shaved Ice – April 1

Welcome back to the work week, everybody.

It turned out to be worth the wait – the Wings landed Dan DeKeyser late Friday afternoon. The Clay Township, Mich., native skated with the team on Saturday, which was when everybody found out that he received a call from childhood idol Nick Lidstrom during the recruitment period. Well played, Ken Holland. Well played.

DeKeyser didn’t play for the Wings yesterday, though maybe he should have – Detroit was embarrassed by Chicago on Gordie Howe’s 85th birthday.

The Wings recalled Carlo Colaiacovo from his conditioning stint in Grand Rapids yesterday, and sent down Brian Lashoff. Detroit takes on the Colorado Avalanche tonight at JLA.

The Griffins, meanwhile, split their weekend games, winning on Friday against the Huston Aeros, but losing on  Saturday to the Texas Stars.

DeKeyser talks to the media after his first Red Wings practice.

Grand Ledge native Reid Boucher had a goal and two assists on Saturday night, marking the first time the NTDP product found the scoresheet in a pro hockey game. He’s our Michi-gamer of the weekend for his effort.

Sidney Crosby’s out for an unknown period of time after a broken jaw from an errant puck.

Max Talbot broke his leg, and he’s out indefinitely, too.

St. Cloud State, Quinnipiac, Massachusetts-Lowell and Yale are heading to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh next weekend. Notre Dame and Miami were both eliminated from the national tournament this weekend, which means that the Central Collegiate Hockey Association is now just a memory.

The Islanders have signed Fighting Irish star Anders Lee.

Happy birthday, Mr. Hockey.

We’ll be at JLA tonight to (hopefully) see the Wings bounce back against the Colorado Avalanche.
