Shaved Ice – March 13

Wednesday edition of Shaved Ice.

The Wings take on the Calgary Flames tonight out in Canada. Puck drops at 9:30 p.m.

Yesterday Detroit called up Gustav Nyquist and sent Tomas Tatar back to Grand Rapids. The Freep’s reporting that the club could get Val Filppula back in the line-up, as well.

The CCHA announced their all-conference teams today. Names like Barber, Trouba, and DeKeyser appeared on the list, making us a happy group at MiHockey. Click here to see the compete team lists.

Yesterday the league announced their scholar-athlete award winners for each school – you can see that list here. One player will be named CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the CCHA Awards banquet on March 22.

Detroit Catholic Central will have a new coach next season.

Eight Michigan natives have been invited to the U.S. NTDP evaluation camp – the most of any state. Hopefully that means we have a lot of Michigan kids skating in Ann Arbor next year.

Our friends at the Grand Rapids Griffins have done it again. Tomas Jurco wrapped in LED lights on a dark rink. AWESOME.

Wayne Gretzky suggested that the NHL go back to wooden sticks in an interview on the Dan Patrick Show. I think we can come up with some better ideas on how to improve the game. Your thoughts?

Blake Geoffrion has decided to retire, according to reports. The Montreal forward, and former Hobey Baker winner, suffered a skull fracture and a concussion in an AHL game in November. Hope nothing but the best for Geoffrion moving forward – we’re just glad he’s OK.

The Senators traded for forward Matt Kassian in exchange for a sixth-round pick to the Minnesota Wild.

Chesterfield native Steven Oleksy had his first NHL fight last night, taking on Grand Rapids native Drayson Bowman. Here’s the clip.

I think Oleksy won.

More news to come. That’s what we’re here for.
