Shaved Ice – Mar. 1

Hey look, it’s March.

Jonas Gustavsson finally made a start in goal for the Red Wings late last night in Cali, and he excelled. The new(ish) Red Wings goaltender stopped 25 of 26, backstopping Detroit to a 2-1 shootout win over San Jose. Patrick Eaves scored the lone goal in regulation for the Wings – his first of the season – and Damien Brunner scored in the shootout to give the Red Wings a much-needed extra point in the standings.

Detroit now holds the No. 4 spot in the Western Conference, one spot above rival Nashville due to tie-breaking procedures (they have the same amount of points). The Wings now have a bit of a breather – their next contest is Sunday afternoon against those Blackhawks everybody’s talking about.

It’s the final weekend of the CCHA regular season (last time this will ever happen, too). Here are the match-ups we’re watching:

  • Western Michigan at Michigan State
  • Ferris State at Michigan
  • Lake Superior at Northern Michigan
  • Colorado College at Michigan Tech (WCHA)

Here’s a quick read on the Wolverines as they prepare for their senior weekend. And speaking of the Wolverines, Boo Nieves was named the CCHA’s rookie of the month today.

Check out our article about Manny Legace – the Red Wings’ goaltender is now the new Muskegon Lumberjacks goaltending coach.

Here are the highlights from the Wings’ win last night.

David Booth’s been popping up in our news feed – the Michigan native is modeling a new jersey his Canucks will be wearing on Mar. 16 to honor the Vancouver Millionaires and celebrate a century of hockey out in their neck of the woods.

From the Canucks' Facebook page.

Ryan O’Reilly will be sticking with the Avalanche, who matched the offer sheet the Calgary Flames threw at the talented youngster yesterday. They matched the offer in a hurry, but will now have to fork over $10 million over two years for their budding star.

The NHL’s three stars for the month of February are Steven Stamkos, Sidney Crosby, and Ray Emery. Still having trouble believing Emery is on the list…gotta give the guy some credit for his career turnaround.

And Jonathan Huberdeau is the NHL’s rookie of the month

He’s not the most well-liked person around here, but you gotta admit, this trick shot from Evgeni Malkin is pretty cool.

We’ll be all over the place this weekend. Keep it tuned to
