Shaved Ice – Feb. 15

It’s Hockey Day in Michigan Eve.

Today marks the beginning of USA Hockey’s ‘Hockey Weekend Across America‘ and the last day before Hockey Day in Michigan. What are you doing to celebrate hockey this weekend? We’ll be all over the place. Click the image below to see our official webpage for the big day, along with a list of more than 100 events taking place.

MiHockey will be back at The Joe tonight for the Wings vs. Ducks showdown. More photos like the one below. By the way, the Wings just announced that they have recalled Gustav Nyquist, and placed Todd Bertuzzi on the injured-reserve list.

Another weekend of college hockey is almost here, too. Here’s the games we’ll be keeping an eye on:

  • Northern Michigan at Michigan State (part of Saturday’s Hockey Day in Michigan Fox Sports Detroit broadcasts)
  • Bowling Green at Ferris State (part of Saturday’s Hockey Day in Michigan Fox Sports Detroit broadcasts)
  • Western Michigan at Ohio State
  • Alaska at Lake Superior
  • Michigan Tech at Minn. State-Mankato

Get ready for the Spartans/Wildcats series with this tune-up from East Lansing.

Other Friday night action include the Griffins hosting the Lake Erie Monsters, the Whalers heading to Kitchener, and the Spirit hosting Oshawa.

It’s Hockey Weekend Across America! Hope you’re wearing a jersey to work/school/the gym/etc. today.

The crazy meteor shower/comet attack/whatever-you-call-it (I struggled in science classes) in Russia today messed up one of the KHL rinks.  Crazy stuff going on over there – can you imagine looking out the window and seeing something like that? Scary.

Livonia native Ryan Kesler is expected to be back in the line-up for the Vancouver Canucks. Never hurts when you can add a video-game cover boy back into your line-up chart. Expect him to be a major boost for the ‘Nucks once he gets his skating legs under him.

Graham James – arguably the worst person in hockey ever – has had his sentence increased from two years to five years by a Manitoba Appeal Court. I hope the sentence also includes a “You’re never allowed near a hockey rink ever again” clause, too.

And in some “you don’t see that score every day” news, a United Arab Emirates youth team lost by a 60-goal margin. Have they ever heard of a mercy rule? Or has the other team ever heard of the “You have to pass the puck 5,342 times before taking a shot on goal” policy after stretching their lead to 40? Come on now.

Getting you fired up for the weekend with a little HNIC video.

Have a great #MiHockeyDay tomorrow everyone, and enjoy Hockey Weekend Across America!
