Shaved Ice – Feb. 13

Welcome to a Wednesday edition of Shaved Ice.

Had a rare Tuesday night college hockey tilt in Michigan last night, as Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech renewed their U.P. rivalry. Apparently the Huskies were the only team that got the memo about the game though; they posted an impressive 8-2 win in the last non-conference match-up between the two teams for the foreseeable future (NMU will join the WCHA after the CCHA disbands in the spring).

The Red Wings resume play tonight, hosting the St. Louis Blues for a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop. Detroit will be hoping that the impressive weekend outings by Jimmy Howard continue into tonight’s contest – the guy was a brick wall in the Wings’ wins against Edmonton and L.A.

Helene St. James of the Free Press reports that the Wings will be without Darren Helm and Todd Bertuzzi for tonight’s game.

Rickard Rakell is heading back to Plymouth after a four-game stint with the Ducks this winter. He had 30 points in 32 games for the Whalers before the call-up.

During Hockey Day in Michigan on Saturday, the Westland Public Library will be hosting a trip down memory lane – click here to see more about a historical look at hockey in our state.

MiHockey contributor Greg Garno writes that one of the Wolverines’ biggest struggles of late has been their lack of a forecheck in this piece for the Michigan Daily.

Latest edition of CCHA Now has been posted, check it out below.

The Blue Jackets made a little history this morning by hiring the first European GM in the history of the NHL. They fired Scott Howson yesterday, and announced that they have named Jarmo Kekalainen as the new GM. Good luck to him – it’s not like he’s taking over an Original 6 club or anything. Where is Rick Nash again?

Check out this NHL.com feature on 15-year-old Jincy Dunne, who has been turning heads in women’s hockey.

A high school goaltender in Minnesota voiced his frustration to his coaching staff by scoring on his own goal, giving his team an obscene gesture with a certain finger, and leaving the ice. Not putting the video in here because it’s slightly inappropriate for younger audiences, but Puck Daddy has it right here.

Speaking of Nash, check out these filthy moves by the Rangers’ star, punctuated by the finish from former Wolverine Carl Hagelin.

See you…later today. We’ll be at JLA to see how the Wings do against the Blues.
