Shaved Ice – Feb. 1

Big hockey weekend coming up.

Tonight, the Red Wings welcome division rival St. Louis to The Joe. The Blues hold a 6-1-0 record on the season. I know, I’m still trying to get used to that, too. No need to worry, Henrik Zetterberg will be in the line-up, per NHL.com and MLive. The Wings’ captain was fighting a sore throat and a fever.

We’ll be at the game tonight – should be a good one. Don’t forget to try Royal Swedish Snowballs, brought to Hockeytown by none other than Zetterberg.

And we will also be at Yost to see the latest round of the in-state rivalry between the Wolverines and Spartans. Here are all the college match-ups we’ll be keeping an eye on this weekend:

  • Michigan State at Michigan (Saturday at Joe Louis Arena in a “Spartans home game”)
  • Lake Superior at Bowling Green
  • Western Michigan at Ferris State
  • Michigan Tech at Nebraska-Omaha

The Griffins are taking on the Hamilton Bulldogs tonight.

In OHL action, the Plymouth Whalers host the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, while the Spirit welcome Peterborough to Saginaw.

Throwback video of a classic Michigan vs. Michigan State battle.

Sharks owner Greg Jamison missed the deadline to buy the Phoenix Coyotes – one would only assume that this will make it that much more difficult for the team to stay in the desert. Seattle Coyotes doesn’t have a very good ring to it, but I’m sure they would be open to changing the name.

Roberto Luongo will make his third straight start in goal tonight for the Canucks. I still can’t imagine him staying in Vancouver much longer.

Jason Spezza is out indefinitely after having back surgery. The Sens’ star had a herniated disc repaired; typical recovery time is six to eight weeks, a.k.a. 30 games.

The latest celly craze to hit the Internet is ‘Kaepernicking’, inspired by San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick kissing his bicep while flexing. Here’s Logan Couture demonstrating.

Did you see our article yesterday about a 10-year-old girl who was pinch-hitting for the national anthem at a Red Wings charity game, only to end up singing a duet with Karen Newman? Pretty cool.

We will be at both Yost and Joe Louis Arena tonight. Two places at once – I know, we’re pretty skilled.
