What. A. Weekend.

Where to begin?

Might as well start with the news that broke yesterday at 5 a.m. – the NHL will actually have games this season. A marathon discussion session between the owners, players and a federal mediator ended early Sunday morning as the two sides agreed on the framework of  a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Latest reports indicate that the NHL season will start on Jan. 19, and teams will play a 48-game schedule.

Now that the Red Wings are coming back, it’s time to take a look at their roster situation – something that is normally done in September, but was put on the back burner because of the lockout. Check out our answers to some of the hot topics surrounding the Red Wings right here.

Tomas Holmstrom is expected to retire before the season begins, according to MLive.com.

And now, for other big hockey news…

Team USA captured gold at the World Juniors for the third time in our country’s history on Saturday, beating Team Sweden 3-1. Here’s our recap of the game; we will have more information how each of the Michigan natives did coming soon. We named Jacob Trouba our Michi-gamer for today, since he was named the top defenseman of the entire tournament. Figured that was a pretty good reason.

The U.S. Women’s 18U team ended up leaving Finland with Silver this weekend, after they fell to Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.

The Honeybaked ’98s were featured by The Hockey News earlier this month.

The U.S. NTDP team traveled down the street to Yost on Friday, and beat the Michigan Wolverines for the first time in program history.

In other college hockey news:

Ryan Kesler’s agent says there’s still no timetable on when the Canucks star can return to the line-up. The Michigan native had surgery on both his left shoulder and left wrist during the extended off-season.

TSN’s Craig Button has released his latest draft rankings – Michigan commit JT Compher checks in at No. 24, the highest of any Michigan connection. Whalers forward Ryan Hartman is at No. 29.

Tuukka Rask headlines ESPN’s list of NHL players with major expectations; the Boston netminder has to take over for Davison native Tim Thomas. Former Red Wing Ville Leino is also on the list.

Pierre LeBrun breaks down the new CBA so that we can all understand it for the next decade.

The Penguins and the Rangers are the two teams favored to win the Cup this year, according to some odds setters.

Congrats to Jacob Trouba (Rochester), Patrick Sieloff (Ann Arbor), Riley Barber (Livonia) and Blake Pietila (Brighton), the four Michigan natives who won gold with Team USA over the weekend.

See you all tomorrow!
