Shaved Ice – Jan. 28

Snow days are better when you can still play pond hockey.

Western Michigan had a big weekend – they welcomed the Michigan Wolverines to Lawson only to beat them both nights. Friday, the Broncos overcame a early 2-0 deficit. Saturday, it was pretty one-sided.

The Spartans split their series with the Penn State Nittany Lions – Michigan State won Friday’s game, but couldn’t find enough offense on Saturday.

Lake Superior lost to Ohio State both nights of their weekend series in Columbus. Ferris State split with Notre Dame.

Speaking of college hockey, Torey Krug is our Michi-gamer of the weekend after a three-point performance for the Providence Bruins Friday night.

The Red Wings couldn’t take advantage of a tired Blackhawks team last night, falling 2-1 in OT to their Original 6 rival. A lone bright spot in the loss was that Johan Franzen scored his first of the season; maybe the Wings can get the Mule heated up.

The Griffins are preparing for a second half of the season that might be full of surprises and roster changes.

Mike Knuble picked up an assist in his first game with the Flyers, by the way.

Fox Sports Detroit was at the Broncos vs. Wolverines game Saturday night – here are the highlights. Always nice to hear Darren Eliot breaking down the college game, too.

Eighteen-year-old Alex Galchenyuk is staying in Montreal for the rest of the season.

The Rangers are trying to sign Jason Arnott, but ESPN is reporting that the team doctors wouldn’t clear him, and now the deal is on hold.

Speaking of ESPN – the network has the Wings at No. 13 in their latest power rankings. Chicago checks in at No. 1.

Thanks to Puck Daddy for finding this…gem. Coaches, this is why you sometimes need to calm down; you may just end up embarrassing and hurting yourself.

See you tomorrow.
