Shaved Ice – Jan. 22

Happy DRW home-opener day, everyone.

Welcome to Hockeytown, Damien Brunner. The new Red Wing made an early bid for goal of the year when he pulled a Pavel Datsyuk-like move in the shootout last night to get Detroit their first win of the 2013 season. Click the link to read our game recap, and to see the goal…you can press replay and watch it over and over again if you’d like.

The Red Wings picked up Kent Huskins today, signing the veteran defenseman to a one-way deal. He will be expected to fill the new void left by Carlo Colaiacovo, who was placed on the injured reserve list after a shoulder injury last night.

The club also recalled Gustav Nyquist from Grand Rapids today, because Mikael Samuelsson is dealing with a groin injury. Maybe Nyquist can find a way to stay here for a while.

NHL.com is reporting that Los Angeles defenseman and Grand Ledge native Mike Greene is out for the season after suffering a back injury in the team’s opener.

Mike Knuble officially signed with the Griffins yesterday. Knuble will join Luke Glendening as the only two Grand Rapids natives to play for the Griffins.

The NTDP U18 team is heading up to Munn for a game with the Spartans tonight. We’ll be there for coverage, don’t you worry. The game’s also on Comcast.

Michigan Tech is going to play a team scrimmage at the old Dee Stadium on Saturday; the Huskies played there until 1972.

Congrats to Muskegon Lumberjacks goaltender Kevin Lindskoug for being named the USHL’s goalie of the week…again. It’s his third time winning the award. Doubt he wants to share it, though.

The latest high school hockey rankings are posted, click here to see if your team made the cut.

Time to get ready for the home opener, Red Wings fans.

Roberto Luongo trade talks are heating up, apparently.

The dude sitting behind former Red Wings assistant coach Paul MacLean last night looked just like Paul MacLean, I’m telling you. Hilarious stuff from Puck Daddy right here.

Ryan Miller slammed the door on the Maple Leafs last night…again.

Scott Gomez is set to sign with the Sharks. Maybe he can score goals if he’s in a warmer climate?

We took almost 100 photos at the High School Varsity Showcase in East Lansing this weekend – click here to see the photos, or click on the image below.

We’ll be with you the rest of the day for the Holmstrom press conference, the Wings’ home-opener, and the Spartans vs. NTDP game!
