Red Wings fall to Chicago Blackhawks in OT Sunday night

The Red Wings fell to the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in overtime Sunday night at the United Center.

Nick Leddy scored at the 2:45 mark of the extra period, firing a shot past Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard that may have been tipped by the stick of Damien Brunner.

Former Michigan State Spartan Duncan Keith scored in regulation for the Blackhawks, while the Red Wings countered with Johan Franzen’s first goal of the season.

The Blackhawks picked up their sixth consecutive win with the OT goal, a franchise record for victories to start the season for the Original 6 club.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings fall to 2-2-1 on the season.

Chicago was playing their second game in as many days after having a road game against Columbus Saturday night. The Red Wings were looking to capitalize on a tired team, yet they were unable to score on five different power-play opportunities.

Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27 shots, while Corey Crawford stopped 29 of 30 for the Blackhawks.

Franzen’s goal – recorded at the 4:30 mark of the third period – came from Henrik Zetterberg firing the puck towards the Chicago goal, and it bouncing to Franzen’s stick. Damien Brunner picked up an assist on the goal, as well.

The Red Wings return home for a Tuesday night contest against the Dallas Stars at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit welcomed the Stars to ‘The Joe’ for the Wings’ home opener last Tuesday, and the visitors won 2-1.
