Shaved Ice – December 14

The MiHockey staff’s thoughts and prayers are with the people of Newtown, Conn., right now, after reports of a terrible incident at an elementary school. Appreciate what you have, because you never know what could happen tomorrow.

Last night we published a story about a goaltender at Central Michigan University that decided she didn’t want to stop playing hockey, so she built a girls team at her school. Four years later, the program is still alive and well, thanks to Megan Brennan.

There’s a disagreement between the Canucks and Ryan Kesler’s agent on how the healing process for the Michigan native and NHL superstar is going.

Today’s Michi-gamer nod goes to former Ferris State star Jordie Johnston – click here to find out why.

Speaking of college hockey, here are the games we will be keeping an eye on this weekend:

  • Western Michigan at Michigan
  • Northern Michigan at Lake Superior
  • Ferris State at Michigan State (Saturday only)
Other games to watch:
  • Griffins welcome the Rivermen to Grand Rapids tonight.
  • Whalers head to Sudbury, Barrie.
  • Spirit go to Sault Ste. Marie, then come home to play Windsor.
  • The Lumberjacks welcome the Fargo Force to Muskegon.

Team Canada has finalized its World Junior team roster, with Saginaw Spirit goaltender and Red Wings prospect Jake Paterson making the cut.

Apparently the NHLPA and the players are exploring going with a Disclaimer of Interest – officially declaring that the NHLPA no longer represents them in bargaining talks. That report came out from former Red Wing Aaron Ward of TSN.

Ilya Bryzgalov, the NHL goaltender who many believe is from outer space (or at least acts like it), is actually training to go into outer space. This news is…humongous big. Hope you catch that reference, otherwise I’m left looking pretty stupid right now.

We posted this on Twitter and Instagram yesterday. Follow us – MiHockeyNow on both social media networks – for hockey photos almost every single day.

We’ll be here all weekend to keep you all updated on the latest hockey news from across the Mitten.
