Shaved Ice – November 14

Well, it’s Wednesday.

Former Saginaw Spirit star Josh Shalla is our Michi-gamer of the day, after a big ECHL performance yesterday. He’s one of our ‘adopted’ Michi-gamers – with so many players coming through our state for college and juniors, we sometimes stretch the limits on who we can highlight. After all, we feel connections to those we watch grow through the game, and it doesn’t really matter where they were born.

Western Michigan’s Brett Beebe and Ferris State’s Kyle Bonis were both named Senior CLASS Award candidates. To see more about it, visit the official site right here.

We’re assembling our list of the 50 most influential people on hockey in Michigan right now, and we want to hear from you. Tell us who you think should be on the list.

The Saginaw Spirit just announced that they have signed a new lease with the Dow Events Center for the next five years. Glad to hear they’re not going anywhere.

USA Hockey has a new corporate sponsor – the battles for nationwide bragging rights will now be called the Toyota-USA Hockey National Championships. The new logo is attached below.

Mark Recchi said that he’s glad he doesn’t have to be involved with this NHL lockout. His advice to the players? The longer it goes, the worse the deal will get for them. (Per TSN)

In case you were wondering, players do lose the year on their contracts during a lockout.

The Leafs and the Flames are both investing in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League – hopefully it will pay off for women’s hockey. In case you were wondering, there is one U.S. team in the league – they play out of Boston.

And speaking of Boston, check out this article from Puck Daddy about how the Bruins’ arena was going to be used for Mitt Romney’s campaign, and how it ended up backfiring.

None of them sound like they’re working towards a career in the music industry, but this is pretty cool nonetheless. Check out the NTDP’s U18 team singing the national anthem after capturing another international tournament win for USA Hockey.

We’ll see you tomorrow, hockey fans.
