Wolverines complete late comeback, win shootout
Captain A.J. Treais is expected to lead the Wolverines both on and off the ice, but it’s been his ability to find the back of the net that’s really making the difference for Michigan early in the season. The Bloomfield Hills native scored with one second left in regulation, then had the lone goal in the shootout to help Michigan earn some CCHA points nobody thought they would end up with after they entered the third period trailing 4-1. Mike Chiasson, Mac Bennett and Kevin Lynch scored for Michigan, and freshman Steve Racine stopped 24 shots. Cohen Adair, Wade Epp, Erik Higby and Ryan Daugherty had the goals for Northern Michigan, while Jared Coreau made 31 saves.
Spartans shut out by Falcons
Michigan State welcomed Bowling Green to East Lansing for a rare Friday at 5:00 p.m. puck drop at Munn Ice Arena, only to be shut out by Andrew Hammond. The senior BGSU goaltender stopped 29 shots, and a lone goal from Connor Kucera in the first period turned out to be the difference in the contest. Freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 24 of 25 shots for Michigan State.
Bulldogs slam the door on Miami
Sophomore goaltender C.J. Motte must be feeling pretty good right now, after he shut out a high-powered Miami offense Friday night. Motte stopped 25 shots to keep the RedHawks off the scoresheet, while Brandon Anselmini, Connor Schmidt, and Justin Buzzeo scored for an impressive 3-0 victory on home ice for Ferris State.
Broncos take care of the Fighting Irish
Western Michigan co-captain Dane Walters recorded two goals Friday night, playing a crucial role in the Broncos’ 3-2 road win over Notre Dame. Chase Balisy added the other goal for Western, while Frank ‘The Big’ Slubowski stopped 35 shots between the pipes. Anders Lee and Robbie Russo had the goals for Notre Dame.
Lakers fall to Nanooks
One goal wasn’t enough for Lake Superior, who lost to the Nanooks in Fairbanks last night. Alaska’s Colton Beck scored the game-winner – a power-play goal – with 11 seconds remaining in regulation. Chris Ciotti had the lone goal for Lake Superior, recorded I nthe first period. Lake Superior junior netminder Kevin Murdock had 37 saves in the loss.
Mavericks best Huskies
Nebraska-Omaha picked up a 2-1 win over Michigan Tech Friday night in Houghton. Tanner Kero’s goal wasn’t enough for Michigan Tech, as a shorthanded goal from the Mavericks’ Zahn Raubenheimer at the 18:50 of the third period proved to be the difference in the contest. Kevin Genoe made 28 saves in the loss.
