Shaved Ice – September 4

Welcome back from the long weekend. Hope you had a great Labor Day!

Quick hits

In case you missed it on Friday, here’s our feature on Plymouth Whalers veteran forward Garrett Meurs.

Speaking of the Whalers, they topped the Windsor Spitfires 3-0 in the “Duel Downriver” at Yack Arena in Wyandotte on Saturday.

We were saddened to hear a report over the weekend that Michigan hockey fixture Terry Kucharski passed away. He was 48.

The Red Wings announced this morning that tickets are now on sale for the Great Lakes Invitational, the Ontario Hockey League doubleheader, and the American Hockey League match between Grand Rapids and Toronto – all part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival at Comerica Park. Information about available ice time from Dec. 15-26 can be found here.

Highlight reel

Here are some horrible playoff goals, compiled for your enjoyment and laughter. However, I must warn you…the first one hits close to home for Hockeytown.

Outside the Mitten

Sunday marked the 40th anniversary of the Summit Series. The U.S. may not have been involved, but it sure was a historic moment for hockey.

Alec Martinez had his day with the Cup – and he spent it in Texas instead of Michigan.

As of Friday, the NHL owners and the players’ association were waiting for when the next scheduled meeting would take place. If they can’t even schedule meetings, then these last 10 days may be pretty rough for fans.

Zach Bogosian is out four to six months after undergoing wrist surgery on Friday.

The Red Wings tweeted the official logo for the Winter Classic…looks good to me.
