Shaved Ice – September 26

Good afternoon, everyone. Shaved Ice ends up being a little late when you forget to set your alarm the night before.

Quick hits

Today, the Red Wings were supposed to be in Pittsburgh, kicking off their pre-season against the Penguins. Bummer.

The Grand Oaks Ice Arena in Howell will feature a charity fundraiser hockey game on Oct. 6. We attended last year – check out our article about it, which includes information on this year’s event.

Members of the Red Wings welcomed another Bertuzzi to their informal skate today – Todd’s son, Tag, got to practice with the big boys. That must have been quite the experience for the 11-year-old forward, who, judging from the photo, plays for Little Caesars (no surprise there).

The Detroit News has a photo gallery of the opening skating sessions at Joe Louis Arena. Glad somebody gets to use the JLA ice right now…

Highlight reel

Having trouble waiting for this to start again.

Outside the Mitten

Michigan native Chris Luongo has resigned from the head-coaching duties at Alabama-Huntsville, and he will be replaced by Kurt Kleinendorst. Luongo played for the Spartans, Red Wings, and Vipers in his playing days, and served as an assistant coach at Wayne State before moving to ‘Bama. Kleinendorst, meanwhile, coached at the NTDP before time at both the NHL and AHL level. Alabama-Huntsville nearly lost their hockey program; now they’re trying to find a conference to play in.

Nail Yakupov has been suspended from the KHL because of a transfer problem with Hockey Canada (his rights are still owned by the Sarnia Sting of the OHL). See that, Nail? First you don’t get to play in the NHL, and now you don’t get to play in the KHL. Not cool, in my book at least.

Edmonton’s mayor fires some shots at the Oilers, pointing out how much harder it would be to sell tickets in Seattle.

TSN is reporting that NHL clubs can submit a list of players they would like to call up from junior teams at the conclusion of the lockout, so that players who would make NHL rosters can continue to play at the junior level while the CBA gets worked out.
