Shaved Ice – September 25

If it’s going to be cold out, it should be cold enough to skate. Let’s just cut to the chase, and get the middle of winter going already. Especially after how mild of a winter we had last year. I want pond hockey.

Quick hits

Let me start out by lobbying for Pavel Datsyuk to get credit for that wildly-creative goal yesterday over in Russia. I think that if the situation presents itself, players should be able to header the puck into the net. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Here’s the goal, turns out they didn’t allow it.

It’s not that Datsyuk needs help scoring – obviously – but the play was unique, worthy of highlight reels, and should have counted. Plus, it’s a KHL game. Count it.

Speaking of Red Wings, here’s a Q&A that NHL.com did with Mike Babcock.

Dan Cleary doesn’t think the lockout is going to end anytime soon. C’mon Dan, that’s like telling us that Santa isn’t real.

Did you know that Detroit Pistons forward Kyle Singler played hockey growing up? That’s still not going to get me to watch the NBA this season, but it’s kind of interesting, right? Right?

Highlight reel

Here’s one that will lighten the mood a bit.

Outside the Mitten

Want to cause panic in Canada? Have hockey fans think they might lose one of their teams. Edmonton owner Daryl Katz and members of the Oilers’ front office took a tour of a new sports arena in Seattle. The major city in Washington is the latest area actively seeking pro sports franchises, and the Oilers need a new building. Hopefully it’s just a bluff to speed up the process of getting a new building in their current home. I would hate to see the Oilers’ faithful lose their team.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly is hoping that the two sides can meet again this week to keep the CBA talks going. They better meet again. And then not leave the room until there’s an agreement.

The family of the late Derek Boogaard is apparently suing the NHLPA for $9.8 million.

The glitch of all glitches in NHL ’13? Or is one of the game’s designers just not a Crosby fan? Kidding, of course, because apparently you can do this to any player. Check out the video.
