Shaved Ice – July 25

MiHockey’s Stefan Kubus writing this for you on a Wednesday morning. Or afternoon. You decide.

Quick hits

The Grand Rapids Griffins just announced that they have signed assistant coach Jim Paek to a one-year extension. Paek has been with the Griffins for eight seasons, and the former NHLer will provide stability for the club as Jeff Blashill adjusts to his new role as head coach.

The Plymouth Whalers will be holding their annual alumni game on August 4. NHL players like James Neal and Tyler Seguin are scheduled to take the ice for their former club.

In case you missed it, the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit showcased a new alternate jersey, while the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks debuted a sharp, new logo.

On this day in 1974, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Larry Johnston signed a deal with the Michigan Stags of the WHA. The Stags, who played out of Cobo Arena in Detroit, weren’t around very long, as they played only a portion of the 1974-75 season, before moving to Baltimore on January 18, 1975.

Highlight reel

Check out this neat video on the world of pond hockey in the U.P. This video takes you on a tour of the ponds of St. Ignace, where they saw almost 200 adult teams and 45 youth teams do battle on 30 rinks.

Outside the Mitten

The Nashville Predators will be keeping their star defenseman and team captain. The Preds have matched the Philadelphia Flyers’ offer sheet to sign Shea Weber for 14 years at $110 million.

The Columbus Blue Jackets – on the heels of trading away Rick Nash – have signed their second-overall draft pick from the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, as Ryan Murray has agreed to a three-year, entry-level deal.
