Shaved Ice – June 18

MiHockey’s Stefan Kubus here with you on a Monday that is shaping up to be rather busy for the hockey world.

Quick hits

The Great Lakes Invitational will continue through 2014, as Michigan Technological University and Olympia Entertainment have extended the college hockey tournament at Joe Louis Arena.

Rumors swirling around Twitter right now say highly-touted Swiss free agent Damien Brunner is down to two teams: the Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings. The 26-year-old Brunner scored 24 goals and 60 points in 45 games with EV Zug of the Swiss-A league last year, and is believed to be NHL ready. According to Damien Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times, the Lightning were expected to sign him, but seemingly lost him for unknown reasons.

Outside the Mitten

The U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp invitation list has been released, and there will potentially be four Michiganders donning the red, white, and blue for the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship. Patrick Sieloff (Ann Arbor), Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge), Blake Pietila (Brighton) look to crack the team for the first time, while Jacob Trouba (Rochester) could possibly play on the team for the second-straight year. That all depends on what happens with the NHL Entry Draft this weekend, however.

The Dallas Stars have brought in Curt Fraser as an assistant coach. Fraser, 54, had been with the Grand Rapids Griffins previously and ranks first in franchise history in regular-season games coached, with 316.

It appears the Tampa Bay Lightning may have solved their goaltending dilemma. The Bolts acquired 6’6″ Anders Lindback, Kyle Wilson, and a seventh-round pick from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Sebastien Caron, two 2012 second-round picks, and a 2013 third-round pick.
