Genesee County police, fire departments to play for “Team Bella”

On June 9th, Burton will host its second annual Genesee County Police vs. Fire hockey game. But this year, there’s a lot more on the line than just bragging rights.

They’re both playing for “Team Bella”.

On Mar. 15, Bella Perge, the daughter of one of the Genesee County paramedics/firefighters, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2.

Abbreviated SMA, this condition refers to a group of diseases which affect the motor neurons of the spinal cord and brain stem. These critically important cells are responsible for supplying electrical and chemical messages to muscle cells. Without the proper input from these motor neurons, muscle cells cannot function properly. The muscle cells will, therefore, become much smaller (atrophy) and will produce symptoms of muscle weakness. SMA is said to kill more babies than any other genetic disease.

Medical terminology aside, this means that she will never be able to walk, and will require the use of a power chair for mobility. As Bella grows, her muscles will not, which will cause her to become increasingly weaker. Eventually, this disease will affect the muscles used for Bella’s breathing, as well.

And although this will be a charity hockey game between police officers and firefighters/paramedics, the night will truly be one dedicated to Bella Perge.

The June 9th game will take place from 4-6 p.m. at the Ice Mountain Arena Complex in Burton. The “Battle of the Badges Face-off for Children” has chosen “Team Bella” to receive all of the proceeds from the game this year.

It’s for an outstanding cause, so mark your calendars, come out for the game, and help support “Team Bella.”
