Shaved Ice – Jan. 3

Good morning everyone. Enjoy the Winter Classic yesterday?

Quick hits

For those of you that were working the remote control pretty hard yesterday, here’s a recap of the NHL Winter Classic, which took place in Philadelphia (in case you didn’t know). The Ranger rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a win over the home-team Flyers 3-2. Veteran Mike Rupp (an Ohio native) had New York’s first two goals – one in the second and one in the third – to earn the player-of-the-game nod, while Brad Richards finished off the comeback. Daniel Briere had a penalty shot and a chance to tie the game with 19 seconds left in regulation, but he was stopped by Henrik Lundqvist.

Be sure to watch the last episode of 24/7 on HBO…the audio of the emotion-filled game should be quite entertaining, especially at the end. As we hockey folks like to say, it got a little chippy out there in the closing seconds.

All of a sudden, Team USA is playing for next year at the World Juniors. Unable to medal at this point, the American squad can clinch a spot in next year’s tournament with a win over Latvia in the relegation round.

Outside the Mitten

Trenton native Erik Condra beat Martin Brodeur for a shorthanded goal yesterday. That makes him our Michi-gamer of the night.

The Russian World Junior team topped Red Wings prospect Petr Mrazek and the Czechs last night to earn a date with Canada in the semifinals. The other semifinal will feature the Swedes and the Finns.

Freshman sensation Ryan Nugent-Hopkins appeared to suffer a shoulder injury in the Oilers’ game with the Blackhawks last night.
